Congratulations Ann Deluxy ! Ann Deluxy is an undergraduate of B.Sc. (Hons) in Biotechnology programme conducted by Faculty of Science-Horizon Campus in affiliation with Nilai University, Malaysia. Recently, she presented her research findings at “Asia-Pacific Conference on Multidisciplinary Research 2017 (APMR2017)” under the track “Physical and Life Science” and received the second place for the BEST ORAL PRESENTATION (student category). Title: Nutritional Improvement of Yoghurt using Seaweeds Authors: Ann, Ravikumar1; Shanika, Gamage2; Kankaniarachchige, Dananjaya3 1,2,3 Department of Biotechnology, Faculty of Science, Horizon Campus, Sri Lanka.
She has successfully completed her research as a partial fulfilment of the requirements of B.Sc. (Hons) in Biotechnology. She has invented a new yogurt product enriched with seaweeds. Although seaweeds are abundantly found in the coastal areas of Sri Lanka and are rich in nutrients like protein, fiber and essential fatty acids; there is only limited evidence of using them as an ingredient in commercial food productions, especially in yogurt like popular food items. She incorporated one of these seaweed species into yogurt and found that the nutritional levels of yogurt can be enhanced when compared to the yogurt products commercially available in Sri Lankan market. With these findings she further recommends that this enriched yogurt product can be presented as a “Functional food” (those containing factors to ensure or enhance health) with the considerable amounts of fiber and Omega-3 essential fatty acids contained in it. With the hands-on experience she gained through the research in the field of “Food Science and Technology”, she is currently working as an intern in one of the leading food manufacturing companies in Sri Lanka.
