Faculty of Science Overview

Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary subject that encompasses an exciting range of scientific fields that include: biological science, biochemistry, agricultural sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, medical and environmental sciences. What we aim to address in the field of Biotechnology are solutions to some of the worlds problems. This may be in the form of accelerated industrial processes, production of safer food and ameliorate the quality of our environment.

The multidisciplinary character of Biotechnology provides students with employment opportunities in Research and Development, Quality Control, Clinical Research, Manufacturing and Production, Regulatory Affairs, Marketing and Sales, Information systems, Education and Administration.

Over the last couple of years the Faculty of Science has been expanding and we offer BSc. (Hons) and Diploma courses in Biotechnology in collaboration with Nilai University, Malaysia. More recently, we have partnered with Arkansas Sate University, USA, offering BSc in Biotechnology which is a significant milestone in the short history of our Faculty!

Horizon Campus, has gained the required recognition and accreditations by the Ministry of Higher Education and the University Grants Commission (UGC), respectively. Furthermore, Horizon Campus and Nilai University are both Members of Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).

These accreditations enable Horizon Campus to recruit some of the very best talent, both locally and internationally, to its faculties thus nurturing the youth of Sri Lanka to excel in the field of Biotechnology in order to face the global challenges.

Furthermore, this productive partnership among students, staff Management and collaborative partners anchor the mission to expand and disseminate knowledge in the field of Biotechnology for the empowerment of new generation.

BSc (Hons) in Biotechnology (Nilai)

B.Sc. (Hons) Biotechnology program is offered by Horizon Campus, in affiliation with Nilai University, Malaysia

B.Sc. (Hons) Biotechnology program offered by Horizon Campus, in affiliation with Nilai University, Malaysia (rated Tier 5, excellent by the Malaysian Qualification Agency in the SET ARA 2011, Recognized by the UGC, Sri Lanka and the Association of Commonwealth Universities) covers major fields of Biotechnology inclusive of Medical applications, Tissue culture in plants, Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, Pharmacology, Environmental Science, Agriculture and Food industry. Bioinformatics and Biostatistics are also included in the program curriculum in order to facilitate research programs. The Diploma students will be qualified to get registered for B.Sc. in Biotechnology with appropriate exceptions. This is an intensive Programme covering 90 credits during 2 1/2years duration.

The B.Sc. (Hons) program is an intensive three year degree program covering 120 credits which will equip undergraduates with vast theory knowledge, first hand practical experience in laboratory as well as in industry and a research project which enable them to excel in their profession with confidence. This multidisciplinary program also focuses on electives in management, ethics, commercialization, marketing and entrepreneurship paving the pathway to become globally recognized scientists and researchers. Graduates of this Programme are recognized to follow postgraduate studies in recognized universities and research institutes.

The minimum entry requirements for the above program are as follows,

Two principle passes preferably in Chemistry & Biology in G.C.E. A/L Examination (Local)
G.C.E. O/L, A/L done in english medium or band score 5.0 in IELTS

OR

2 E preferably in Chemistry & Biology (or Physics) for A2 in London Examination. If only AS level is completed, registration will be considered under diploma criteria

G.C.E. O/L, A/L done in english medium or band score 5.0 in IELTS

OR

Diploma in a related field (with a Pass)

G.C.E. O/L, A/L done in English medium or band sore 5.0 in IELTS.

The multi-disciplinary character of Biotechnology provides promising opportunities in research and development, quality control and regulation, clinical research, manufacturing and production, marketing and sales, information systems, academic field, administration as well as entrepreneurship. It encompasses an ever-growing range of techniques for the alteration and manipulation of molecules, genes and cells and often involves the harnessing of biological processes for a particular purpose. The biotechnology industry is based on the commercial exploitation of these techniques.

BSc in Biotechnology (Astate)

Biotechnology is technology based on biology. It is the use of living organisms - often minute, micro- organisms - to create products or perform tasks for us.

Those organisms may be as simple as yeast or as complex as cells, genes, bacteria or DNA. By combining cellular and bio-molecular processes, we can develop technologies and products that help improve our lives and the health of our planet. Modern biotechnology provides breakthrough products and technologies to combat debilitating and rare diseases, reduce our environmental footprint, feed the hungry, use less and cleaner energy, and have safer, cleaner and more efficient industrial manufacturing processes.

The Course has a strong focus on the business skills that are crucial to the commercialization of biotechnology, including intellectual property, enterprise management and marketing and it is taught by lecturers who are also successful researchers in an industry that is constantly evolving. The course has strong support from the biotechnology industry.

2 Credit Passes & 1 Simple Pass at ALs | Proof of English Proficiency

TOEFL - Paper-Based 500 / Internet-Based 61
IELTS - Academic 5.5
PTE - Pearson Test of English Academic 43
iTEP Academic - 3.7 or higher
Completing the required level of a CEA
Accredited ESL program
Obtaining a minimum of 60% in English at X and XII in Certificate in India and Pakistan
High School Graduate from USA, UK, Canada (except Quebec), Australia, and New Zealand
