Bachelor of Education (Hons) in Biological Sciences

The Bachelor of Education (Honors) Degree program in Biological Sciences conducted by the Faculty of Education is an undergraduate degree program to develop both academic and professional competencies of undergraduates with GCE Advanced Level Biological Science Subjects. B.Ed. (Hons) Degree is exclusively designed for prospective teachers, existing teachers and managers of the Education Sector and the professionals involved in the field of Education both in state and non-state institutes. By reading this degree, prospective teachers or teachers who are already in service will be able to develop knowledge and the competencies in all the aspects of teaching, including principles of education, Biological Sciences subject areas and learning teaching methodologies, practicum and educational research which enhance employability skills not only in Sri Lanka but also abroad.

Course Overview

Bachelor of Education in Biological Sciences is a Teacher Education Program comprise of professional, general, academic and practicum components keeping in line with international practices of teacher education and training. Further, teacher education programs are appropriately based on the local curriculum implemented in Sri Lankan schools, more culture specific and catering to the emerging trends and changes in the field of school education, keeping in line with the national policy recommendations on education. This program comprises with 120 credits and the duration of the degree program is 04 years.

  • To enable teachers to facilitate child centered interactive and individualized learning according to the psychological and sociological needs of the child as well as to equip the teachers with the ability to perceive classroom contexts, philosophically and orient the students to face the emerging challenges of national integration and development adherering to democratic ideals.

  • To expose the teachers to educational problems and issues and encourage research leading to inquiry testing, analysis and propose solutions and to create excellence in professionalism among the new generation of teachers and encourage continuous professional development.

  • To develop and sustain an interest in and knowledge of science as well as to develop a working knowledge of scientific methods of investigation. Further, this program facilitates to develop an appreciation of scientific criteria and a concern for objectivity and precision.
