Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary fields that encompasses an exciting range of scientific areas that include: Biological science, Bbiochemistry, Agricultural sciences, Pharmaceutical sciences, Medical and Environmental sciences. What we aim to address in the field of Biotechnology is solutions to some of the global problems. This may be in the form of accelerated industrial processes, production of safer food and ameliorate the quality of our environment. The multidisciplinary character of Biotechnology provides students with employment opportunities in Research and Development, Quality Control, Clinical Research, Manufacturing and Production, Regulatory Affairs, Marketing and Sales, Information systems, Education and Administration. The Faculty of Science has been expanding and we offer BSc. (Hons) and Diploma programs in Biotechnology in collaboration with Nilai University, Malaysia. In 2021, The University Grant Commission and the Sri Lankan Ministry of Education have both authorised and recognised the Faculty of Science's new degree program, the B.Sc. (Hons) in Biotechnology.
The faculty of Science offers a multitude of undergraduate programs within various scientific disciplines. These programs are developed to nurture the scientific minds with comprehensive researches, projects, laboratory techniques to enhance knowledge and skills as demanded by the industry. As our course programs are globally accredited, our students are highly sought after in the national and global arena.
Founded in 2013, the Faculty of Science of the Horizon Campus Malabe, provides opportunity for students to obtain the degree of Bachelor of Science ( Honours) in Biotechnology, a highly demanded degree in the world today, in medical, agricultural, environmental , industrial, research and education sectors. The faculty started its first degree programme, B. Sc (Hons) in Biotechnology in 2014 partnered with the Nilai University, Malaysia and have successfully completed more than 06 graduation cycles producing more than 200 graduates from this programme, who were readily accepted by both local and international employers and educational institutes. Horizon Campus and the Nilai University are both members of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU). The faculty continues to offer this foreign degree progrmme at the Horizon Campus and presently cater for over 80 students. With the proven track record in biotechnology education, the Faculty of Science commenced its own degree programme, B.Sc. (Hons) in Biotechnology in 2021, which is approved and recognized by the Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka and the University Grant Commission.
