Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary subject that encompasses an exciting range of scientific fields that include: biological science, biochemistry, agricultural sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, medical and environmental sciences. What we aim to address in the field of Biotechnology are solutions to some of the worlds problems. This may be in the form of accelerated industrial processes, production of safer food and ameliorate the quality of our environment.
The multidisciplinary character of Biotechnology provides students with employment opportunities in Research and Development, Quality Control, Clinical Research, Manufacturing and Production, Regulatory Affairs, Marketing and Sales, Information systems, Education and Administration.
Over the last couple of years the Faculty of Science has been expanding and we offer BSc. (Hons) and Diploma courses in Biotechnology in collaboration with Nilai University, Malaysia. More recently, we have partnered with Arkansas Sate University, USA, offering BSc in Biotechnology which is a significant milestone in the short history of our Faculty!
Horizon Campus, has gained the required recognition and accreditations by the Ministry of Higher Education and the University Grants Commission (UGC), respectively. Furthermore, Horizon Campus and Nilai University are both Members of Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).
These accreditations enable Horizon Campus to recruit some of the very best talent, both locally and internationally, to its faculties thus nurturing the youth of Sri Lanka to excel in the field of Biotechnology in order to face the global challenges.
Furthermore, this productive partnership among students, staff Management and collaborative partners anchor the mission to expand and disseminate knowledge in the field of Biotechnology for the empowerment of new generation.
Founded in 2013, the Faculty of Science of the Horizon Campus Malabe, provides opportunity for students to obtain the degree of Bachelor of Science ( Honours) in Biotechnology, a highly demanded degree in the world today, in medical, agricultural, environmental , industrial, research and education sectors. The faculty started its first degree programme, B. Sc (Hons) in Biotechnology in 2014 partnered with the Nilai University, Malaysia and have successfully completed more than 06 graduation cycles producing more than 200 graduates from this programme, who were readily accepted by both local and international employers and educational institutes. Horizon Campus and the Nilai University are both members of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU). The faculty continues to offer this foreign degree progrmme at the Horizon Campus and presently cater for over 80 students.
With the proven track record in biotechnology education, the Faculty of Science commenced its own degree programme, B.Sc. (Hons) in Biotechnology in 2021, which is approved and recognized by the Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka and the University Grant Commission. The faculty has already enrolled four intakes of students to this programme amounting to more than 400 students. With around ten years of experience in biotechnology education in Sri Lanka, the faculty of science has now developed the necessary human and physical resources in its State-of –the –art, international standard modern campus with an enriched curriculum for the empowerment of the new generation of students to face the present and future needs of the global biotechnology industry.
The students are guided and supported by a well- qualified, experienced teaching panel, programme coordinator, and the laboratory technical staff. The students are exposed to an interactive learning environment with laboratory work, field visits, excursions, community projects, research projects and industrial training. The faculty is also dedicated to provide the students both co-curricular and extra-curricular activities to enrich them with much needed life skills for promising and fulfilling careers. The environment and the corporate culture of the Horizon campus help mold the able young biotechnology graduates with confidence, to cater for the future demand of biotechnology graduates of the world.
