The main objective of Bachelor of Education (Hons) Program is to develop competent, committed and dedicated teachers who are much needed for both public and private sector schools in Sri Lanka. The program, which is approved by the Ministry of Higher Education, Sri Lanka, offered by the Horizon Campus, consists of professional and general components along with practicum. At Horizon, a modern teaching and learning atmosphere is provided, that includes both personal coaching and mentoring by highly qualified teachers as well as state of the art Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) in which students and teachers interact via computer-based learning tools. After completing the degree, the employment prospects will be excellent as the private education sector is fast-growing in Sri Lanka and Overseas. Also, secure employment in the state sector as there is a demand for English medium teachers.
.The Bachelor of Education (Honors) Degree program conducted by the Faculty of Education is an undergraduate degree program to develop both academic and professional competencies of undergraduates for working in the field of Education. B.Ed. (Hons) Degree is exclusively designed for prospective teachers, existing teachers and managers of the Education Sector and the professionals involved in the field of Education both in state and non-state institutes. By reading this degree, prospective teachers or teachers who are already in service will be able to develop knowledge and the competencies in all the aspects of teaching including principles of education, specialized subject areas, learning teaching methodologies, practicum and educational research which enhance employability skills not only in Sri Lanka but also in Overseas. The Bachelor of Education (Hons) program is conducted in eight semesters (four years) with 120 credits and combines both coursework and practical experience in educational settings. It provides with a broad knowledge of the principals of education, a firm foundation of teaching skills and practices in educational research. The BEd degree curriculum covers both the content and pedagogy of teaching. The undergraduates learn and practice the art of teaching, from its psychological, philosophical, sociological and historical underpinnings with practical considerations.
To enable teachers to facilitate child centered interactive and individualized learning according to the psychological and sociological needs of the child as well as to equip the teachers with the ability to perceive classroom contexts, philosophically and orient the students to face the emerging challenges of national integration and development adherering to democratic ideals.
To enable teacher trainee to identify varying problems and hazards that are persistent in children and guide them and adopt appropriate techniques of school counselling and to facilitate specialization in selected pedagogical disciplines. Further, this program is beneficial to expose the teachers to educational problems and issues and encourage research leading to inquiry testing, analysis and propose solutions.
